It's role is as a shock trooper but it is not the firebat. Since the firebat has not yet been announced it has been widely speculated but not confirmed that it is replacing the firebat along with the confirmed fact from Blizzard that races are "gaining and dropping units".

You guys do know that it's a very possible thing that Blizzard was playing an April Fools joke, right? Like one April fools day when Blizzard said that the new race of Warcraft 3 was the Pandarian race.

I've been on internet forums for a while and I find that unless you add something implying that you know that something is a joke. No body can tell if you're being honest or not because anything can happen on the internet.

I know it's a fake and just a joke, but like I said I went to a lot of internet forums and some of them have this group of unbelievably stupid people. And after that, I don't assume that a person means this or that way without something leading me to it.

It was a designed post to fool anyone susceptible. Simply linking it by itself may have left them to just go "Nah its fake" but when I said it can easily fit as the replacement for Firebat that can instill thoughts that it has the actual chance, however small, to be the replacement for it and a legitimate unit.

So yeah Firebat's replaced and Blizzard has alluded to this ever since the cheat code there is no cow level, when footage has circulated of the marines on the page that it is due to small visual clues in it, a campaign level where you control a squad of them.
