During the Third War, the Lich King noticed how much more powerful, and more intelligent the Ice Trolls were compared to Forest Trolls, since Ice Trolls were mostly in Northrend, Ner'zhul wanted to take advantage of these powerful warriors to empower his army. However; when Illidan damaged the Frozen Throne, the Lich King was losing his power; thus losing control of a fraction of his army (This is when Sylvanas and the Forsaken broke free). He also lost control of the powerful Ice Trolls, which were enhanced by a large degree because of Ner'Zhul strengthening them with his power, and his reawakening of the Ice Trolls' age old demonic corruption, once they were under control by demons, for a long while after they were freed, they were capable of creating a civilization, and were merely just brute hostile units in tribes fighting against each other for petty reasons, until the Lich King united them under his banner. Now, King Malakk came to take the throne to gather up the tribes that were in control by the Lich King, he took advantage of this confusion to slay each tribe leader, and take ultimate control, and make his mark onto the world, as a ruler. He then created an elite fighting force to fend off the scourge while their new empire was formed.

King Malakk traveled to Kalimdor during the third war, before the orcs discovered Kalimdor. The trolls were out searching for allies, and whilst searching, one of King Malakk's search parties ran into an underground cave, which held an entire clan of Dark Trolls. Most of the search party was killed, but few managed to survive. King Malakk had interest in these trolls, because he had heard they are the most populated troll race in azeroth, and he felt he could use that to his advantage. So he sent a small army, along with himself into the underground cave. He ran into many magic wielding trolls, known as warlocks, it was a fierce fight. Him and his small army powered their way through the underground cave, until he ran into the chieftain, Zan'gash. King Malakk challenged Zan'gash for the supremacy of his clan. After a fierce fight, King Malakk defeated Zan'gash, cut off his head, and showed it to his clan, showing them that they belong to him, King Malakk, now.

When gathering the Dark Trolls at a lake nearby, he watched as they swarmed out of the cave, scores of warlocks and powerfully built warriors. Before he came to Kalimdor, he also forcefully took over numerous tribes of other races that all wanted revenge against the Lich King and rest of the world.

After Arthas fused with Ner'zhul, most of the Scourge were forced to regroup in Northrend. While the Lich King gathers his army and plans his next invasion. King Malakk's empire grew to an almost unstoppable size, having many allies from the north, and the scores of different tribes from Kalimdor, including the Dark Trolls. the New Troll Empire was a brand-new threat that would not be easy to deal with. though the Horde and Alliance didn't know about it until a few raiding parties attacked Theramore and various outposts of the Horde. At first they thought it was simply a small clan that underestimated the two forces, but they soon found out that this New Troll Empire absolutely dwarfed the combined forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Many human and orc scouts found various settlements, all mainly native Kalimdor tribes, except they were lead by Ice Troll and Dark Troll commanders and lieutenants. Both the Horde and Alliance are afraid of this massive empire, and they have yet to realise there are so many more trolls waiting at the base of the New Troll Empire, a huge fortress with countless powerful guards of all races, and walls higher than the skies themselves. At the center of this fortress resides the most powerful troll of them all. King Malakk, a troll, a force to be reckoned with, with a strong Ice Troll body, strengthed by Dark Troll magics, and empowered by the Lich King's and the Burning Legion's power.
