![]() | Winter is Coming Well, to start out, I hope this is the right place for this topic. And now, onto the map. Winter is Coming This is a map based off of a Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. The plot, in short, is that the king is dead, and war has begun (takes place roughly near the end of the first book if you've read them-if you haven't read this far in the series, there might be spoilers ahead). You take control of one major House of the continent (with the exception of the Mountain Clans), and try to destroy your enemies, though I'm not sure what the ultimate victory condition will be. Each faction will hopefully have its own gameplay-some Houses are much more powerful than others, however, the weaker ones are going to have some other advantages to make it possible for them to succeed. And, like in the books, straight up power won't be the only way to win. You can ally or declare war with anyone (with only a few exceptions), so for weaker Houses especially, backstabbing will be a good way to get power. Two thirds of the factions start out at war, and the other third neutral. There will also be some special events/findables, but not too many that it interferes too much with gameplay. Factions: House Stark-House Stark starts out with the most heroes, demis, and cities, but controls the largest area of land (meaning that it's the hardest to defend. Although their "deathtrap" at Moat Cailin defends from landbased attacks, House Stark is vulnerable to attack from the water. The Starks' northern castles and cities provide some of the best cavalry and melee infantry. House Stark starts out allied with House Tully and at war with House Lannister and King Joffrey. House Frey-One of the weaker factions, House Frey controls a main river crossing connecting the north to the riverlands. House Frey also controls a decent amount of wealth, and a sizable army for it's small territorial holdings. Their best chance lies in the fact that their position makes them a useful ally both to the Starks and Tullys, or enemies of the Starks and Tullys. House Tully-The main House of the riverlands, this faction is one of the major Houses, although they are weaker than the nearby Lannisters. They start out allied to House Stark, and at war with the Lannisters and the King. King Joffrey of the Seven Kingdoms-Technically the king, Joffrey's reign is plagued by rebellion. King's Landing is one of the largest cities on the continent, and the master of coin, Petyr Baelish, ensures that the King will have plenty of gold to spend on crushing his enemies. The King is allied with House Lannister, and at war with Houses Tully, Stark, Tyrell, and Baratheon (both brothers) at the start. House Lannister-One of the strongest Houses, the Lannisters control the westerlands. The Lannisters are the only faction at the start that can field longbowman, which are the most powerful (and one of the best) archers. The Lannisters are also the richest House with the most starting gold income. They start out in position to attack the riverlands, which they are at war with. The Lannisters also start out allied with King Joffrey, and at war with Houses Stark, Tyrell, and Baratheon as well as House Tully. House Martell-House Martell controls Dorne at the southern end of the continent. Although their army is small compared to that of most major Houses, they have excellent cavalry and excell at ambushes. At the start, they are one of the major balancing factors in the game as they stand ready to attack House Tyrell or Renly Baratheon if those two immediately attack the Lannisters and King. House Tyrell-House Tyrell controls the reach and has the largest army of any House. They are also one of the richest, but the Greyjoys and Martells are poised to attack if their borders are left unguarded. House Tyrell starts out at war with House Lannister and the King, and is allied with Renly Baratheon. Renly Baratheon-Renly Baratheon conrols the stormlands, which can field a moderate army. Renly starts out allied with House Tyrell, and at war with the Lannisters and King. House Greyjoy-The resident pirate faction, the Greyjoys homeland is the Iron Islands, off the coast of the Westerlands. They also have the strongest navy, and excell at attacking coasts and pillaging, although alone they cannot stand up to most houses in a full scale battle. House Arryn-House Arryn controls the Vale of Arryn, and has several excellent defensive positions and strong cavalry. They are one of the most powerful neutral factions at the start, and could easily decide starting conflicts. They start out at war with the Mountain Clans. Stannis Baratheon-Stannis Baratheon controls Dragonstone and several nearby islands. His army is relatively small and his navy only decent. However, the hero Melisandre has several nasty powers. Stannis starts out at war with the Lannisters and King. Mountain Clans-The mountain clans in the Mountains of the Moon have been the enemies of House Arryn for ages, and only survive by hiding and avoiding open conflict. However, as scavengers, they excell at pillaging and their units will improve the more that they kill. With their allegiance bought with promises of weapons, the clans have agreed to follow Tyrion Lannister and aid his family in their struggles. The Mountain Clans start out allied with the Lannisters and King Joffrey and at war with House Arryn and all the other enemies of the Lannisters and Joffrey. Income will depend on the amount of cities/castles/other special buildings controlled, and unit spawns will be customizable (you get to choose what you spawn). ![]() | Re: Winter is Coming @Leopold-I tend to concentrate on the walls, because I'm extremely uncreative when it comes to filling up the insides of the bases. Houses, post hitchings...every now and then I get an idea or two but usually not. So I try to make good walls to distinguish the bases. @Stubby-yep, all humans. And there are a couple of bases that aren't as circular, but they're uglier so I didn't post them. |

![]() | Re: Winter is Coming @Leopold-Did I mention on this forum yet that I was extremely uncreative in terms of doodading? I'll see what I can do, and definitively look at any specific suggestions, but I can't make any promises that I'll get enough unique ideas to replace a good bit of the round castles. @Stubby-I can't help that G.R.R.M. created "The Dreadort", and "The Banefort", and maybe some other fort-named forts ![]() And about the ally system. Currently it stands that Houses Stark and Tully are allied permanently and at war with the Lannisters and their allies, though I might throw in a condition that says if Catelyn and Robb die they can unally. Stannis is permanently at war with the Mountain Clans, King Joffrey, and Lannisters. Tyrells and Renly are at war with the Lannisters and their allies at the start, and are permanently allied until Renly dies. Then they can make peace with the Lannisters and friends. None of this is final though, cause I'm trying to find a balance between the lore, and more importantly, keeping players' options open while keeping things going (if some nations are permanently at war hopefully it will keep the pacing going, so people don't just go neutral and mass until someone gets bored). The problem of keeping alliances balanced is also a problem, so I might have to create some limits on alliances (like larger nations can ally less while smaller ones can have more allies). |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Winter is Coming Well, i think that every alliance should be able to UNally, at least. For example, if somebody gets a bunch of troops into an "Allied" base, and start attacking stuff, the other person should automatically unally him. ![]() And now, directly from chip's signature... ![]() |

![]() | Re: Winter is Coming When you unally someone it takes 5 seconds to go into effect, and they automatically unally you as well. And another thing. I had an idea for heros, but I'm not sure whether or not to implement it. As opposed to the regular hero system where you have 3 levelable, learnable hero skills and an ultimate, I thought of this: Each hero starts out with 1-4 skills. They gain levels are normal heros, but their skills upgrade automatically upon reaching a certain level, and again at a later level. They gain an ultimate when they reach a certain level. Demi-heroes would also be like heroes, except they would not have an icon on the left hand side of the screen, and would gain less attributes, and possibly no ability upgrades. So what this would do would 1) make it so that I don't have to come up with filler skills for heroes, thus making there be less overall hero skills and large hero groups more manageable, and 2) save me loads of time in the editor making hero skills (less skills, no learn tooltips). They only downside I see to this is less hero skill customization and a few more triggers in an already trigger-laden map. So should I do this or stick with the regular system? |

![]() | Re: Winter is Coming basically my new idea is that, instead of having say, 3 skills and an ultimate which you learn one per level, you start out with 1-4 skills, and they level up automatically when you hit levels 4 and 7, Heroes learn their ultimates automatically at level 6. This makes it a tad easier to manage more heroes I think (less filler spells needed) and more importantly, speeds up the map release date by alot cause I don't have to do as many tooltips. That any better of an explanation? |

![]() | Re: Winter is Coming its bascially so it's easier to manage mass amounts of heroes (dont have to worry about skill picking on all of them), to try something new, and to save me time on doing tooltips, which would make this map be released a good bit sooner. And I suppose it would enable heroes to gain spells at different levels etc, and stuff but I havn't given much thought to that yet. |

![]() | Re: Winter is Coming Based off of this thread and the poll at the World of Arda forums I've decided to try this new system in the initial map tests, and revert to the old system if people don't like it.[br]Posted on: July 25, 2007, 02:09:08 AM_________________________________________________O kay here's a list of all the special events I'm thinking off right now. Some will be relatively minor, other potentially game changing. However, I plan on including a list of them somewhere in the game, or something that will allow people to know what might happen to them. They're listed by the book they occured in so anyone that might be in the process of reading the series doesn't have to see spoilers. Includes Spoilers for A Game of Thrones: Eddard Stark: 10-15 minutes into the game Eddard will be sentenced in King's Landing. He has a 40% chance of being executed (might lessen if Joffrey dies first) (Robb becomes King of the North), and a 60% chance of being sent to the Wall (removed from the game, and no King of the North). The Lannisters also have the option to return Eddard to House Stark, allowing House Stark to be able to end the war between the Starks/Tullys and Lannisters/Crownlands/Mountain Clans (otherwise they are at war for the entire game). Also, if House Stark or its allies capture the Red Keep before this event happens they can rescue Eddard and House Stark gets him as a hero. Sansa Stark: Sansa can be rescued if House Stark or its allies capture the Red Keep. Ice can be found in King's Landing if the Red Keep is captured. Includes Spoilers for A Clash of Kings: Wildfire: The Pyromancers begin to produce wildfire (Pyromancy guild building appears and starts spawning wildfire items, which act like goblin land mines) Arya Stark: 20 minutes in, Arya has a 30% chance of appearing under Stark control at Winterfell Renly-Highgarden Alliance: If Renly dies, House Tyrell and Renly's troops are no longer permanently allied. Includes Spoilers for A Storm of Swords: Littlefinger and the Vale: The King can send Littlefinger to the Vale in hopes of securing a marriage and alliance (if Lysa lives). 50% chance of successful marriage, (follow up Lysa dies and Vale gets LF as hero), if that happens, 50% chance that the Vale will become allied to the King and Lannisters (not mountain clans). Red Wedding: If Robb takes the Crag and the Freys are his allies, he has two options. 1) Marry Jeyne Westerling, which rejuvenates the Crag to 2 mana and spawns another demi hero and units for the Starks. 2) Marry Roslin Frey, who becomes a new Stark demi hero. If the first option is chosen, if Robb goes to the Twins the Freys have the ability to suddenly declare war, spawning additional units in the Twins. Includes Spoilers for A Feast for Crows: Euron's Return: After 30min, every 5min there is a 30% chance that Balon Greyjoy will die (if he's still alive), followed by Euron's arrival 1 min later (new hero for Greyjoys and several warlocks and Euron has dragon-controlling horn item). Several minutes later, a kingsmoot occurs if Old Wyk is under Greyjoy control, and you can choose which of Victarion, Asha, Theon, Euron to be king/queen, depending on whos alive. I think being King will just mean a bonus aura "Ruler of the Iron Islands" Rise of the Faith: Unsure yet, but a lot of militant holy warriors will begin appearing after enough cities/castles have changed hands (each time one is captured a variable goes up, this event happens when it gets high enough). |
