this strategy isn't always the best way to start and I am aware that some heros start differently. I found however that this strategy works relativley well with all heros though it tends to work better in AR because of the additional money you get at the beggining.

1. save up your money till you have 1000 gold (in ar all you really have to get is 450 from battle because you start with 300 and can sell boots for 250) and buy an amulet of life, I find that this gives a major boost to your hero and will keep it from dying until you get another (later on)

2. now that you have life start gathering more money until you get 1500 and get either another amulet or a crown of kings (the one that gives +10 to all stats and endurance aura), choose amulet if people are paying a lot of attention to you and trying to kill you a lot pick the crown otherwise.

3. now you should have a hero that can gather money fairly easily so start farming and buy whichever item you didn't in step 2

4. depending on which type of hero you get (melee or magic) get either flamecloak (melee) or armads (magic, for those people who get ams)

this is another strategy that you can choose if you disagree with the first.

buy tomes of powers until level 16 then (so you are about 5-7 levels above all your opponents) then tech units.

I have had a lot of wins with both. it depends on whether you're good at microing or not. if you arent I suggest the origonal strategy because it allows a lot more room for error (a lot of health) while the first one demands your full attention because you hero doesn't have nearly as much life although his skills will be a lot more powerful then anyones else's.

I usually try my best to keep my hero out of harms way. That way I can skip on the amulet of life till mid game when people can start to deal hurtin real fast.

Titan

Amulet of life is a waste of money on all heroes except those that dont have over 2k hlth by lvl25.
If you tome, only tome to lvl11.
Always get flameclock 1st thing ingame, no matter your hero. Flameclock gives 5 armor and an immo that helps immensly vs footmen.
And if your a pro, just save your money untill u have about 6k then depending on your situation, use it appropriately. If you dont understand the last part, or dont agree with it, then you are not a pro.

okay do not follow what i wrote before. i was a noob then and i admit it. i have gotten better and found that what titan wrote below is MUCH better then what i wrote earlier. but i still have to disagree with him about the flame cloak. i don't think that you need to buy that if you are a ranged hero because you shouldn't plan on getting surrounded if you are (unless you are really high level and someone still hasn't teched)

even if they are ranged...doesnt mean u need to be attacking at a distance. I know bloodmage is better with flame cloak.

I think if u get flamecloak before level 8, it will work very well against footies because u can buy a potion and go in someones base and (Depending on what your hero is) maybe ult or cast some AoE spells or just let them footies BURN!! Then use potion when low on hp and tp back to base.

the only problem with that strategy is that if the player was smart they could stun you before you use the potion or tell their footman to hold postition and not attack you

I like the idea of a cloaked up ranged hero. Run into a base and have a crap load of healing items and all and a tp scroll. run in with claws or something. run in middle and get surrounded and watch your gold go up. farm them to death

The flame cloak strategy is not really meant for ranged heros. It can work for any hero, but it works best with a strenth hero that has a lot of HP.

Using hold position worked in other footy maps. But in ultimate footies, a lot of AoE spells at level 3 can kill footies. The x-kill is really the only effective way to save footmen from being farmed.

I disagree with saving to any sum, 6k or otherwise. The best rule of thumb is to farm as many teams as possible till someone starts to slow you down. Then, you spend the money you have to counter thier new strategy. I found out from experience that in the time it takes for you to save up that last 1000 to get a crypt, someone else can pass you by.
