.JPEG, .PNG, .GIF

Well after you make your art you still have to save to. There are many File extension that you can save your graphics as but there are many to choose from. The common ones I see that graphic arts are usually saved by are .JPEG, .PNG, .GIF. And I'll tell you how you know which one to use.

.JPEG is usually used for high quality images. They are good to save photos or images without any text on them. What I know is that .JPEG usually have this weird pix like boarder around the text. It doesn't look that good. So I use .JPEG when I don't have any text on my graphics.

The JPEG compression algorithm is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics.
.PNG is usually used for graphics with lines and text on them. They don't make a weird pix like boarder like .JPEG does. For me I use .PNG a lot because a lot of my graphics has text in them.

PNG can be 10 times the size of JPEG but preserves sharp edges

As you can see that why .PNG is a better choice when using text. But also I heard that .PNG uses more space then .JPEG.

The last one I commonly use and know is .GIF. And one of my favorites. It's qualities are absolutely worse then .JPEG or .PNG. So why use it? Because I got one word for you. ANIMATION! That's right. .GIF supports animation and you can make them with a multi-layer image saved in .GIF.

I'm very well aware that there are many more file extensions then just these three. Like .BMP, which you would use for MS paint. .XCF, which you would use for GIMP. And whatever Photoshop uses. And then there's .TIFF. But from my experience these three are the main three you should know.
